Anne Constantine
detail of Confide in Me—
» I have recently
worked in photography, installation, text and performance. I feel
my work succeeds when its ambiguity unsettles the viewer, when thought
is provoked and questions are raised rather than answered. «
Constantine is a Nottingham based artist, whose work revolves around
issues of self and identity, taking on the notion of the constructed
self. Her current practice questions certainty, playing with the
boundaries between fact and fiction. She consciously borrows material
and idea, exploring the post-modernist concept that originality
is a myth.
Constantine’s artist’s book, Confide In Me is
inspired by the work of Adam Chodzko who placed adverts in newspapers.
The book appears to be a true document with evidence of an artistic
activity, but Constantine questions the status of photography as
documentation. These ideas came from her consideration of work by
Sophie Calle, when what is exhibited is often the apparent documentation
of an activity, in the form of photographs and text. This work leaves
the audience questioning the letters authenticity, which is the
very response that is at the heart of Constantine’s work.
