James Lindley

detail of Pollock Painting—

» To become immortal you need
to die. Preferably in public. «

Lindley is a contemporary artist from Nottingham. His work is based on the idea that artists are often presented as stereotypes and are treated more and more like celebrities. With the public becoming more interested in the life style of these celebrities, the art work they produce becomes secondary. Lindley explores how the artist may become famous not for the art they produce, but for the tragic life they lead. Consequently, the more tragic the life, the more notorious the artist and their artwork becomes.

Lindley’s work, Pollock Painting is based on the image of the artist Jackson Pollock, and uses Hans Namuths’ famous photographs of Pollock at work. The media’s perception of the ‘cowboy painter’ has become more real than reality itself, it is hyper-real. Lindley has used humour to unmask the macho, troubled, heroic artist and unveil the genius, thus revealing the media’s construction of Pollock the cowboy painter that goes hand in hand with what is really important: Pollocks art.
