Phil Toy

detail of Real Slides—

» I am interested in how we categorise things in a wider context of beliefs within a contemporary 'rational' structure. It's about how we perceive things - if I believe something to have certain properties then I will classify it accordingly - and raises questions to do with our relationship with 'reality'. «

Phil Toy is mainly concerned with how we perceive and order knowledge, demonstrated in how we display things. By showing his slides on a light box Toy plays with our expectations, tricking our mind into believing that what we see is only the miniature of what we are meant to see. In reality though, the images are elaborate pictures made by compressing pieces of news clippings in clear resin. This questions the confidence of our perception of things familiar to us, and forces the viewer to rethink.

Our reaction to this concealment becomes an integral part of the work and makes the piece interactive. The chosen motifs add another level to the exploration of originality, since many of the human forms chosen derive from effigies of classical models used by other artists.
